Gender Reveal, Gender Revile was a pop-up performance piece created by Women in Action in response to rising transphobia within the UK and beyond. The piece was made as part of Open Awards Level 2 Drama for Social Change, Group Devised Project Unit was performed at two different locations as part of Pride 2025.
Gender Reveal, Gender Revile was performed twice on 27 July 2024, first at LCR Pride and second at Access Pride. The first performance was interrupted and cut off halfway through, due to a logistical problem with staging we were put on the family stage instead of the originally allocated community stage. Perhaps we were deemed inappropriate for this particular audience… or were we just too Radical for LCR Pride?
The performance predated the Supreme Court ruling on the meaning of “woman” by a whole year. The process of developing this piece opened a space for examining preconceived ideas of gender and led to an increased sense of solidarity across the company. This work directly led on to a deeper exploration of identity and womanhood in all its forms and directly informed our Women in Action 2025 exhibition Gender, Identity and Art. The Adult Theatre for Social Change group attended this performance as audience members which led to them having open discussions about gender, inclusion and censorship.
