This exhibition co-created by Women in Action, led by fine artist and theatre maker Joanne Tremarco, explored the changing representations of gender, sexuality and women*.

The artworks invite you to interrogate identity through ‘archetypes’ such as the fool, the sage, the caregiver, the innocent, the ruler and more. These archetypes form symbols which represent faces of the human psyche, behaviour and personality in order to help us understand ourselves and what influences us.

There is a fine line between these archetypes and the stereotypes which restrict us. Women in Action have been working to use and dismantle these figures in order to address themes of health, wellbeing, women’s working conditions, LGBT+ identity and their intersections with class struggle. Challenging these stereotypes can help us to break free from patriarchal and heteronormative ideas. It’s time to change the rules and celebrate who we are.

*Trans women are welcome in our women’s groups. The same goes for non-binary, gender fluid and gender queer people who feel included by the term women.
